CONTROLLER DESIGN: Getting from Theory to Practice (1992 Bode Lecture)
Presented by Brian D.O. Anderson Produced by the IEEE Control Systems Society
Run Time: 1 Hr./1VHS Tape, 1992
NTSC
ISBN 0-7803-0369-5, PAL
ISBN 0-7803-0380-6 IEEE

Theory for design of control systems has made huge strides, and many of these advances are embodied in sophisticated commercial software. But theory and software can still fall short of providing truly practical controllers. For example, many software packages produce controllers of order approximately equal to that of the plant, which may be high, indeed unacceptably high. Likewise, many theories yield, controllers defined by a continuous-time transfer function or transfer matrix whereas a practical controller may need to be a discrete-time implementation. Finally, some solutions yield a controller transfer function, as opposed to state-variable realization which is more appropriate for implementation in finite word length arithmetic.
In this lecture, remedies for these three shortcomings are described. In the process, a number of traditional ideas, e.g., those related to discrete-time controller design, are overturned.
